What do you all think about these? why? What's your favorite if you like them?
I think some self-help books are good, depending on what the person thinks they need help on. I personally don't like the ones on relationships because I personally think a lot of what to do should be common sense and the how to be happy ones I'm not much into either because some people seem to emphasize that because of that book they now know themselves or something and that just sounds weird. I guess it just sometimes bothers me how some people who read such books seem to rely on or refer to it a lot. It even feels weird to me when I hear a preacher or other religious person that constantly refers to the Bible or another religious book when they speak. These books can of course have there good points but still.
However, other ones such as those about jobs, money, safety, and sometimes time management can have ideas I hadn't even thought of. The activity ones to figure out your personality can be fun too.
*smile* Now that I said what I said near the beginning of this post, I'm going to say that my favorite self-help book is actually a parenting one called Parenting with Love and Logic. I do look at other parenting writings and watch what parents do with their own kids, but I think that book has some good ideas and I agree with the method of parenting/discipline explained in it. (I'm not a parent, but it doesn't hurt to learn about it anyway.) *smile*
Self help books are okay if you need an instruction on how to do this and that. I agree with the previous poster, when it comes to dealing with relationships, only the person can figure out what to do because everyone's situation is different. Self help books are very good resources to develop a broad understanding about specific topics like How To's, but there is a few disadvantages. Self Help books are very objective and are only focused to one view of an issue. When your buying or when your reading a self help book, just remember that every author's ideas are different. You got to read several different perspectives about the issue before you evaluate which ideas are useful and which aren't. As far as favorite self help books, I don't have a favorite, but most of the books I read are writing handbooks, those can be considered self help as well because it teaches you how to write well. I personally think that reading an autobiography is more helpful than reading a self help book about living your life.
